Guinea pigs or heroes?

Patients who participate in clinical trials benefit a lot from doing so. One of the saddest things about being an oncologist is when friends become patients, or when patients become friends. This was a friend who became a patient. He was in his early 50s when he was diagnosed to have prostate cancer last year. I treated him with radiotherapy. He was also treated with hormonal therapy, which was largely devoid of side effects. Sadly, the cancer recently metastasised (spread) to the bones.

Drug trial potential for Bay

HUNDREDS of patients in the Bay may soon be participating in major clinical trials that have the potential to create a new multimillion-dollar industry for the region. Tauranga-based medical researcher Dr Shaun Holt, who has just set up Clinicanz, is establishing a network of 40 general practitioners and practice nurses who have access to nearly 100,000 patients.
